Thoughts on Black Friday

Written by

On Thursday night, my sister-in-law and I had to take a trip to Wal-Mart for an everyday necessity. When we walked in the store, hundreds of people were standing around large boxes. About 30 seconds later, the employees opened the boxes to unveil DVD's that were on sale for $10. Screaming ensued. Shoving started. Somebody was actually knocked over like it was a mosh-pit at a Metallica concert. Finally the police were called in to break the whole thing up. One of the women walking out of the chaos was clutching the movie Legally Blonde in her hand like it was the last piece of bread on Earth.

Steve Argue wrote this on Twitter this morning: "Today stands between Black Friday and Advent - Two messages that call Christians to two very different kinds of anticipation."

As followers of Jesus, we live in the tension of both worlds, don't we? While this season is about celebrating the birth of Christ, we also live in a world that obsesses over receiving gifts from 3rd cousins that we haven't seen since the previous Christmas.

When you see these two worlds colliding, what goes through your mind?

BTW, $10 for a DVD? especially one as old as Legally Blonde? isn't exactly a Black Frday "score" ;)

I think we have to be careful to not be too cynical at Christmas. I think there is a new trend in Christianity that bashes gift-giving. Don't get me wrong. I understand where you're coming from and have seen greed at it's full potential revealed on the biggest shopping day of the year. BUT, I also know people that view the Black Friday Sales as an oportunity to reach more people and use the resources that been given to them by God. I know a woman who stood in line and waited for a store to open to purchase winter coats for a local Men's ministry in town. She had chosen a "tag" to give a warm winter coat to a specific man that didn't have one. The coat she wanted to get him was usually $80. Her intent on black Friday was to get as many coats as she could with $100 AND GIVE THEM all to this ministry. She ended up leaving the store with 5 REALLY NICE winter coats in different sizes AND because of an in-store coupon and un-published sale, she also left with 5 packages of warm socks! What a way to steward His money and get the most blessings possible! I think because of the society we live in, it's extremely difficult to give a "just-because-He-led-me-to" gift. But for some reason, at Christmas, that awekward-ness disappears. I believe that God wants us to give out of the abundance He's given us. And that he wants us to give cheerfully without expectation. For me, personally, one of the greatest heart-joys to have at Christmas-time is to know that God was able to use little me to help fulfill a need. That He was able to use little me to display His love to someone who may have not experienced it before or to someone who has forgotten that they ARE loved and cared about.
